Today is also the anniversary of Churchill's, "Never in the field of human conflict . . ." speech. In reality, the English Channel is what saved Britain. The actual battle was fought by a few thousand men at most, some of it seven miles in the air. The real slogging match was over in the Soviet Union, which Churchill had been trying to draw into the war since day one. But old Winston did make a point when later Stalin kept screaming for a "second front", that is, a western invasion to force Hitler to divide his forces. Churchill correctly pointed out Stalin could have had a second front "any time he desired after 1940"
Ha, good one, Winnie!
Here is that famous photo of the camel shadows in the Empty Quarter, a couple weeks ago, but I just saw it today. It was taken from a "motorized paraglider".
