Yesteryear
One year ago today: May 5, 2023, a long day, clearly.
Five years ago today: May 5, 2019, the big project.
Nine years ago today: May 5, 2015, researching pedal pubs.
Random years ago today: May 5, 2018, a 55th anniversary.

Homer says “Happy Cinco de Ocho:. Did it really take me 9-1/2 hours to get started today? The government gave Los Angeles $3 billion for yet another stab at high-speed rail. As if we have not heard that gambit for at least fifty years, the other station is Las Vegas. Great, now my tax dollars subsidize California’s gambling and prostitution. That’s interesting, A.I. can often pinpoint a users location within 15 miles by factors such as their writing vocabulary.
The XP computer. It has no hard drive, I figured I had four or five I was not using. Wrong, two were SATA drives and the other two were 80 Gigabytes from way back in 2008. There was a SATA disk in the can with the cable unplugged, but no way could I get the boot to recognize it. I even hauled out my hard drive external readers and they are both SATA. I have two IDE readers but where? I found the box of audio cables and I’m almost out of those as well. They get used up rapidly connecting DVD players, which I have everywhere from Miami to Nashville.

Here you see one of the 80s I rigged up to test the setup, but no dice. It’s likely the age of the hard drive at fault. Chances are I’ll go SATA but just you watch, after I get it together a box of 500 Gig IDE will show up around here. I’ll get something tiny to install only the opsys, I’ve long switched my data to portable drives. One thing I’ve always had top notch was my filing system. Y’know, I’ve never seen a serious course on organizing data files, it’s one of those things they expect you to pick up if you handle files. Wrong, that just creates problems that cannot be undone.
Where I learned it [proper file organization] was from the study of databases. Conceptually, the fields are no different than files when it comes to searching. The approach is the same as a sort—you design it so the largest categories come first. I’ve worked with University grads who could not create a database unless the data files were in the same order as they displayed, duh. They had to search every Main Street in the State before they searched for the one in your town. When their searches slowed, their solution was always the same. Buy a faster computer.

I have an old squirrel who’s on his last legs. A pity, but one must not interfere with the balance. What an awful noise, he’ll be gone in a day or two. The big squirrel baffle is down for modifications. The cardinals don’t care for it, but anything smaller seems to get right to it. Remember Moonwalkers, the cybershoe? They are plugging them again at $1,400 per pair. My plan was to offer them half price for a returned pair in new condition. But then I discovered why I had pain walking uphill was not going to cease with a pair of electric shoes.
Florida sent in the cops to bust up a campus protest, most of us have long lost track of who’s on what side. But we can assure you the last time there were widespread protests, the music was much better. The protests are too organized this time around, it’s probably a Soros thing. I would not join any college protests these days on principle, meaning the women are too ugly. BWAAA-ha-ha-ha.

I got the Tascam working but the setup is not a simple slide control. Like a lot of digital recorders, the input level is automatic. The mix is done during the output stage, which is about the only convenience, I chose tracks 7 & 8 to keep them out of the way if things don’t go as well in the fun and games that accompany every gig. Bench testing does not apply to dark noisy clubs and today’s gadgets love small, unlit buttons with multiple menus. What a disapointment that forty years into the now mature recording industry, there are still no standard locations or sizes for ports, knobs, or voltages.
How is Chateau JeePee coming along. Here’s the basic shell, the main structural parts are now solidly glued in place. The main entrance is customized for our turtle pal and I’m at odds whether to give him a floor to sleep on. It would make the unit heavier and possibly harder to clean. Not shown is ramp up to the balcony. It would have to fit between the water dish and the wall, which may make it too steep. On the other hand, this turtle is far from helpless.

Seems more than a few Democrats are being rounded up using the very laws they voted for to ensnare Trump. DC has announced they will shorten Biden’s speeches to focus on quality over quantity, their words. Others say he’s a bumbling idiot gone senile. I say he doesn’t fool me. He knows what’s coming and he’s playing the dementia ticket to save his neck. America does not execute crazy people, even traitors.

The Manta Ray, a remotely-operated submersible, has completed a round of sea trials. Northrop claims a fifty –year development history. If so, they were busy in the interim milking the Defense budget. The mission is unclear but drones are cheap so just detonate the whole thing. The sensors and systems would all be recent developments that waited until industry tooled up for spare parts. The weapon is modularized so it can be transported in five ordinary shipping containers and set up on site.
Speculation is the device can anchor itself and use the motion of the ocean to recharge. They make a big deal it is autonomous, which is their way of saying it isn’t a robot, but remote controlled.Northrop is better known for self-guided ammunition. Their latest is a shell fired from a navy gun without modification. It locks on target and can rapidly change direction. It’s a shell, not a rocket, so how this is done, I don’t know. But the traditional navy had better do something damn quick about the pending swarm attacks we all know are coming.

Caltier is buying an apartment in DC, my least favorite part of America. It must be a good deal because the wrong change of administration can send vacancy rates soaring. Caltier only says the inspection was positive, but so far they have bought every building that passed. Called the “Cortland” expect it to be on the list soon.
