June 16, 2004

Iran was founded today in 632. Following is a list of all the important things that have come out of that civilization since then. Get it? Ha-ha. But really, today is a fairly active day in history just by itself. In 1977 Wernher Von Braun smoked his last cigarette. In 1959, George Reeves, the original Superman, proved he was not faster than a speeding bullet (suicide).
For you mainframe types, when this day started, 18,122,400 minutes has elapsed since midnight of January 1, 1970 – the Unix epoch. That's correct. Unix computers start counting on that date. That's today's trivia. You know, Wikipedia does have a sort of today in history list you can access by typing the month. But it is pretty dry reading. And it pales compared to slick presentations like this blog.
You picture today is a photograph taken of the Galaxy M87 on this date. This is not a Hubble, but a Canada-France effort from the observatory in Hawaii. And the dollar has fallen 25.5% in value since ten years ago today. That is, what cost you six bit back then now costs a buck. I predicted one of the reasons inflation hurts some people more than other is in the future, you have to earn the dollars instead of borrow them. Ha!
