March 8, 2018

Yesteryear
One year ago today: March 8, 2017, if it’s pretty enough.
Five years ago today: March 8, 2013, 11.5¢ per mile.
Nine years ago today: March 8, 2009, I am Finkalodeon.
Random years ago today: March 8, 2008, little noises.

Don’t examine today’s post too closely. It was a day of logistics since I was too worn out to do much else. Don’t laugh, this blog began (in November of 1979) some 40 years ago. Everybody grows a little old and weary in that amount of time. The whole blog isn’t published. Until it is, just you be careful not to judge. I’m as tempted as the next guy to go back in time and edit what was said. But phooey on that, you get the version that actually happened.
And one of the things that happened tonight was I figured out that car wash over on Oak(?) is grossing $16,920 per month, on average. Not exactly a killing, but enough to attract attention. At least four hours of each day, he’s pulling in $64 per hour, had for another four hours, half that. The reality is he must be doing much better than that to break even, but I’m seeking the minimums required to keep the doors open.

I found a shop to repair the scooter brakes. They charge $75 per hour plus parts. But that’s better than being a consistent $149 over budget on gasoline every month. My tumble into my old bad habits was nearly instant with that car. With a few days I was driving it on errands like a single load of laundry or one bag of groceries. When added to the insurance, the car is chewing up 30% of my household budget. Not good. I cranked the scooter and it fired right up after sitting six months. Agt. R will be over tomorrow to haul it to the shop. I could technically drive it, but it isn’t meant for 15 mile runs any more. Dudes, it is for putt-putt around town only.

If you find these days are sparse on postings, that’s the most I can deliver. The focus is the band, the end result of all that should be more dynamic posts. For now, do what I do and wait for the situation to catch up. And I’ll go on record that last night I met the gal who might just make the grade. She’s a little on the young side, but has no illusions about her chances. As a single mother, her chances are zero, but she meets my other criteria. It’s likely a no-go, but like I said, for the record.
Next, I returned to the coffee shop with the newspaper. There’s a big furor about Trump’s import duties on metal, mostly from Europe so far. They’ve got nerve, as they’ve already got more duties in their own favor than Trump is proposing. I’m just curious, why steel and aluminum? Sounds like pork barrel to me.

There was also the big NASA release on the storms of Jupiter. A big upsurge in activity, as shown here. But if that half-baked shuttle program had been scrapped, we would have had the planet-wide coverage of Jupiter since 1980 as it should have been. (I’m with the team that says under the gaseous coatings of the outer planets, there is a solid core worth exploring. By robot, of course.)
This picture shows a central cyclone surrounded by eight anti-cyclones. It’s a great demo of physics on a grand scale. I had concluded on my own when I was eight years old the concept that if a principle applies on Earth, it would apply anywhere in the universe. This was before I’d studied Newton and other theories. Nor was it the result of critical thinking on the topic. Actually it was because I noticed some forms of “science fiction” were just too weirded-out to waste my comic money on. Later on, I was to find out such nonsense had a moniker: “New Age”.

ADDENDUM
So, what’s this? A list of what is on demand at Hulu. What is that? Television? How would I know? I’m only looking at the list. I’ll take it as a compilation of what DVDs I should be on the lookout for. Fair enough? I’m a movie fan. Let’s see, the complete seasons 11-12 of “Ask This Old House”. I’ll skip that one. “A Guy Thing”. “A Mermaid’s Tale”. Tell you what, instead I’ll just look for which ones I already have.

                      Antitrust
                      Body of Evidence
                      Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
                      Fatal Instinct
                      Hart’s War

Geez, I’m not doing so good. I’m missing out on the major releases of the millennial era. Gems like “Jack Goes Boating”. “Power Rangers”. “Bad News Bears”. I’m going to have to make a deal with the system. I’ll watch your movies eventually, but I don’t want to be around when the millennials discover that watching porn and gaming 18 hours per day does not make them power users, and they reach for their AK-47. Can we shake on that?
Seriously, I’m surprised by the number of movies on that list that were produced more than 20 years ago. It’s 27 out of 76, or over 35%. What have I been saying about the lack of distinguishing creations by the plugged in generations?
