Yesteryear
One year ago today: May 14, 2022, rated for 500 lb.
Five years ago today: May 14, 2018, not one decent spot.
Nine years ago today: May 14, 2014, a $98 holiday.
Random years ago today: May 14, 2012, anybody who thinks . . . . .

It’s no fun, I have mild insomnia. This blog is proof I’ve learned to deal with it a long time ago. Today’s mention is because I lose the occasional day by having to sleep straight through. So good morning, it is now 9:30PM at night. I got up, fed the cats, and fell back until now. Did I miss anything? This poor sleep cycle also keeps me off balance, so let’s take it easy. Go online. Drink coffee. What’s this, a photo of a homeless camp in California? Are they saying the homeless here have cars and motorhomes?
Whoo-hoo, I just received notice on of my pension funds (I’m a firm believer) was increased by $23 per month. Hey, that’s almost half a tank of gas. The point is, this is the pension I invested in when I was 28 and has paid off thousands of times. You know, so I don’t become homeless in a $100,000 RV.

Let’s take a look at the news, this blog was not intended to bother with outsiders, but a lot of people felt that way up until 2015. That’s when Trump changed everything. Other than the COVID hoax, very little of this has impacted my life. I dropped into the old club late last evening and the crowd has permanently changed. It was simple, when they closed for COVID, al the regulars said screw this and found other places. It was Karaoke night and a lot of the material had no meaning to me. The crowd has also gotten rougher, I think it is people from the mines around here. Boisterous couples “kicking up their heels”.
I’d rather read, which I did, an in-depth look at zener diodes. If that is Zener, too bad, I’m following what I saw. I don’t believe I have any, nor does there appear to be an easy way to identify them. The one that caught my interest is the 5.1 volt. Two questions. How do they arrive at these voltages? What happens to the current that is blocked? (Is it wasted as heat?)
Unpacking some transistors, I found that matching pair of servo motors. But I still have not come up with an idea for the Etch-a-Sketch. The clock has been done, so probably also the temperature although I’ve not found any examples. On with the thinking caps, we need to at least match the clock idea. A robot that draws something on an Etch-a-Sketch via little motors attached to the knobs.

We have troubles finding the adaptors for the compressor tubing. It’s difficult to fathom why nobody has these expensive items when they also sell the other fittings. They are made by a company called Streamline. De Santis, the Governor of Florida, quietly and secretly signed a law sealing his travel records. (Epstein Island?) If anyone asks it was baked chicken and corn for supper. Wide awake people still get hungry. The coating is a special of mine, massalla, tumeric, a hit of turbinado, and garlic. I like garlic in any form, in this case powdered. It’s just fine.
Howie isn’t back from holidays, so I fed the cats gourmet canned food. They are skittish and I’m the stranger, so no pictures. Oddly, they don’t whine at feeding time like domestics, I guess they’ve learned opportunity doesn’t have a real schedule. I tried to get work done, but other than reading, insomnia tends to throw me off balance. It’s like gaining weight after a heart attack, you brain doesn’t allow for it and you bump into things more than usual, but only when you are not paying attention.

Trying to do a bit of work, I said nope. I’ve had this condition since childhood and should know better. It’s not so much mistakes as setting down a tool and forgetting it five minutes later. Waste time looking for it. Worst culprit? Work gloves. I had Tampa radio and you know, I’m starting to really dislike that “Rock and A Hard Place” song. They are just milking it dry, remember when they did that to “Every Day Is A Winding Road”? For a while there you just could not get away.
I removed the perch from the suet feeder. There was evidence the squirrels learned to hang from it. This makes it observationally “twice” as hard for the Downeys to feed, but they certainly know where the good grub is by now. But if I did not say, they will visit the other feeders. It’s good I made up some extra baffles, as the squirrels are now so lean and hungry, they will bother with the slim pickin’s from the ball feeder. If I’m back in this time zone by tomorrow (usually I get 36 hours interrupted sleep), I’ve penciled in putting up the hood. Too bad any squirrel lovers out there. I don’t feed rodents. The time I took Theresa for Chinese does not count.

Here’s a close-up through the window of the squirrel hanging from the chain with just enough reach to get the top layer of sunflower seeds. Good thing I kept that extra length of chain to extend the hanger. The way these squirrels keep at the feeders tells a lot, they are out of resources and had best move on. If not, they get a free ride to the Civil War Cemetery.
Should I remain sleepless, I have plenty to keep busy. I strongly prescribe others do the same. If I’m on balance, I could build boxes or birdhouses. Maybe some more saw ponies, or shelving. If off balance, I could calculate some GPs (celestial navigation), play bass, wire up some electronics, read, write, or bake some cakes. It’s nice outside but I rarely commit to big projects in the morning unless they can be finished before the heat hit’s 90°F. I’ve misplaced my Morse code book but not my disregard for people who complain there is nothing to do. Can’t think of anything to do? Try inventing a big pair of pliers that don’t pinch when you hold them wrong.

ADDENDUM
I took a closer listen to “Rock and A Hard Place”, I’m still not impressed, but young Bailey is making a good show of pretending the lyrics mean more than they say. It’s a three chord song with a fourth chord thrown in as a turnaround. First, the song does not have a bass line. It centers on an Bb minor chord, but don’t try to use the youTube video which shows it in F# minor, or Ultimate which says it is Am. Use Audacity to grab the tune and transpose it down to Am for my voice.
Zimmerman is an archetypal success story, raised within driving distance of Nashville, started in rock, found the tank saturated, and did a Kenny Rogers into country. An easy youth of baseball and dirt bikes that could easily be warped into standardized hardscrabble, You know the script, drove truck from an early age, etc. What, they forgot to mention.his dad owned the company? Electra Records glommed onto his first demo, calculated he had the right mix and next thing you know it sold a million on the first day. Now worth around $7.2 million at age 22, Zimmerman keeps his net worth a closely guarded secret. Except you can’t fool a trained management accountant.
Getting back to the music, no bass line means I could write one but my rule is it must not change the character of the piece. Yet root notes don’t add a lot to such music. It is also, like most of his and other contemporary music, funerary slow with themes to match. Something of this fairy tale doesn’t add up yet oh, how it keeps on rolling.
