One year ago today: September 5, 2024, the spring is gone.
Five years ago today: September 5, 2020, living vs. talking.
Nine years ago today: September 5, 2016, slowly moving in.
Random years ago today: September 5, 2021, Australia’s the Marxist lab.
A day off, let’s see how much nothing I get done today. I once lived 800 yards from the Canadian border. I remember the first time I tasted chai, the tea made with milk and cinnamon was in a hippie café in a subdivision called Kerrisdale. Nice, but too costly for me in those days. I bought some chai concentrate a few days ago, to be mixed hall/half with milk. Not a winner. Not much like I’ve had, kind of an odd spice mixture. I also first tasted carob at that café, I was just a kid first time in a faraway city.
Not only is the Tasco microscope brand new, the reason it was in an unmarked carton is that was a factory shipping box. The telescope needs almost complete assembly. Fortunately, the instructions are in English and the lenses are clearly marked. The body of the unit is powder-coated metal. Behind as I am on everything, I may take this morning off and put this thing in working order. Have you ever assembled a microscope? Me neither, so fasten your lap belts. (A search on Tasco user manual does not bring up the Tasco site in the first 100 listings.)
First surprise is this in not the model pictured on the manual, but a more sophisticated-looking “lab” model with some features I’ve not seen before—alas, I lack the equipment to photograph them. This shows some type of vernier scale adjustment to the table. Plus the eyepiece lenses were sealed in vials. There is also some sort of light focusing lens under the slide table, with a card marking this is the “S” model “for lab work”. None of these extras are mentioned in the instructions.
But, I figured them out. It’s superbly made and another first for me, the mirror is not a plated of glass, but has both a concave and convex side. Aha, it is called a ‘condenser lens’. I will attempt to find instructions on-line without signing up for anything. I know from before the best all-round lens setting is 100x, that is now done. An ordinary 5mm LED gives plenty of light at that magnification. For sure, this sturdy and obvious quality instrument is getting its own wooden box today.
This will test my skills. The shape of the microscope means it won’t fit into any of the Golden Ratio boxes I’ve built so far. The obvious wood is the 1/2" pine, which will have to be built up with the biscuit joiner unless I can find some plywood. The box also has to stand on end, so I have to design a handle into the end piece where I used to just drill finger holes. Why not just bolt on a handle like the others? Because, look closely, those are drawer pulls that have a left and a right. Can’t use ‘em.
What’s with the small craft warning, this is as calm a day as you’ll get around here. Let me check what gives—here we go, 60 mph winds—but no storm warning. Is this Russian weather control? Let me zoom out. Nope, winds east 5 mph. Says it might rain tomorrow. Later, there’s the storm—1,600 miles away. Where is that? Here it is, Colborne. Talk about the middle of nowhere, here, you give it a try.
Clues: some nearby spots on the map: Griffis Corners. Lakeport. Grafton. Any idea yet? Try Roseneath. Nothing. Okay, here’s a giveaway, Prince Edward. Now you know it is in Canada. It’s a pimple on the north shore of Lake Ontario, a hundred or so miles northeast of Toronto. It has 14 streets, I counted them. This storm may be the only thing happening in Canada today except the taxes going up.
And last for this morning, who remembers when I post that I have not seen any evidence that this Epstein character did anything illegal. I said, he’s one dirty bastard, but nobody has heard his side. He’s been painted as a pedophile but the Feds seem to pull that one with everybody that outwits the. I have not see any evidence, not one picture appears of him doing anything wrong—certainly not the photos of the 30-something skanks we’ve seen. Those were not “underage” in 2019 or anytime much before that. Those are professional hookers, New York style.
Possibly he did meet and chat up those under 18, but that is not illegal. Nor does that one single picture of him with a fully-clothed girl just before her 18th birthday prove a thing. There is also another factor not being addressed. Take an ordinary older man, turn him into a billionaire, and ask this question. Why would he ever hire a prostitute older than he absolutely had to? If he only went for the ones that were on the morning after their “18th”, one could hardly blame him. I’m not discussing what is right or wrong, I’m making a point. These days even a woman much over 20 is one hell of a risk.

Face it, I do not like phones. First JZ calls. The story emerges. The dog was left in his care and it died this afternoon. Says it got up this morning, everything seemed fine. The past noon, the doggie lied down and never got up. Like myself, he’s not that keen on dealing with pet death. I would add that for his family, pet death has more religious significance that usual. We talked about the general situation and all’s I can say is people, get yourself a hobby that lastswell beyond your own best before date.
Such as sawing boards for the microscope case, shown here at the cutting and biscuit stages. The boards are being built up into wider panels, what you see here did not work well. This lumber is not sawn right for this type of joining, it will cup and crack and shrink. The piece shown here cracked when flattened for drying after glue-up. There is a tech-type difference in the way I label it a crack or a split.
Cracks can be repaired with glue, sawdust, and putty. The crack is done, you are just filling in the cavity. With a split, you may be dealing with on-going internal stress on the wood that remains unseen.. I’ve found this repair requires a super type of glue and filler. I chopped out the worst sections and the pieces here are clamped with Ultimate Tite-Bond.
The Reb called, she was genxed by the moving people she had contact. At the last moment, with zero notice, they said her hutch was “too big”. Hours later, I was just about to call Lem for a hand when she texted she had wound up giving it away. Yes, the beautiful Moroccan heirloom. I still have no news on the newer place, knowing only that it is much smaller. And I don’t necessarily believe the landlord that the old place was sold. He’s a guitar player.
How did my search for the Tasco manual go? Nowhere. The search algorithm has changed in the past week. You cannot filter out junk with a minus sign. Every search brought up everything for sale in the universe. Telescopes, riflescopes, and the video listed on how to use the XY vernier table shows somebody turning the knobs with royalty-free music in the background. Duh.
How about Australia. Armed gangs of migrants going door-to-door smashing into houses with the police standing by to arrest any homeowner who tries to resist. Newest side hustle, turning in prostitutes, you can collect up to 40% of what they owe the IRS. In Germany, you must be fully vaxxed to qualify for assisted suicide. There are a growing number of people who have applied for over 5,000 jobs.
ADDENDUM
I was never one to follow politics until Trump arrived, but I recall my first brush with bad politics. It was the quorum system based on percentages, one of the most easily cheated policies out there. I was in university, returning for my second year and was hit with a $12(?) extra fee, which I did not have. Fees were not to be raised unless approved by a 75% quorum of students on campus. Guess what? During summer semester while the rest of us were away at work, the rich kids were able to form a quorum of only 58 people. To charge the other 9,900 students for converting the library to Braille for the 2 blind people at the school.
Quorums are in the news because of the Demtards in Texas who tried to manipulate the system. They walked out so the remaining representatives could not form a quorum. Well, they just got their arses handed to them. Texas passed a law that they cannot collect campaign funds while breaking quorum. And get this, the series of $5,000 fines also applies to anyone who tries to donate funds during a walk-out. These laws could cripple the Texas Democrat party almost permanently. The irony is the laws were put in place by the Democrats themselves for a different and sinister purpose—to calculate where and by how much to outspend Republican candidates.
This was always dirty pool. The Democrats have a house of cards and collapse is imminent. I hope it starts in Texas just because, though Florida is just as likely. The cutting off back-door money, the surge of voter registrations and clean up of the Florida rolls has one Democrat admitting they have been shunted out of power for the rest of this century. California is a joke and I heard a term to day for the first time. People who flee that state are “leftugees”. Turns out they may have been pretending left to survive. The stats how they are not voting left where they arrive in places like Texas.
Watch for a nice big fine for Hyundai. The car plant Biden promised would provide thousands of jobs to Americans in Georgia. Instead, ICE raided the place to find it was operating full-tilt with only 450 employees and all were illegal aliens. Biden is not out of the weeds, he was lying on an international scale on this one.
