January 30, 2026

Yesteryear
One year ago today: January 30, 2025, my 40GB of history.
Five years ago today: January 30, 2021, suddenly okay.
Nine years ago today: January 30, 2017, Window. Wall. Block.
Random years ago today: January 30, 2010, Half a wasted day.

Hopefully I’m still with us. This should find me in the fancy-pants hospital, charming the snakelies out of the prettier nurses in my more lucid moments. Soon as I'm well enough, I'm planning on trips to seven cities in the van. It's an SUV, but I call it the van. I want to see Savannah again. I've never seen Houston or Dallas.

Here’s my latest quiz in my quest for a trivia partner. In my day, all five were mandatory, today I’m lucky to find anybody who knows these are all in Europe. Imagine a map of Europe and, with minor minor hesitation, point to each of these two islands and three cities and give a one-sentence comment why each is historically important:
• Elba
• Monte Cristo
• Chernobyl
• Nuremburg
• Guernica

Yes, the Count of Monte Cristo features a real island and Napoleon’s first jail was not off the French coast. Here is a blank map of Europe to help. Hint, if the place is too small for scale, just point to the correct general location. At some point, all these places have been featured in this blog and all are famous for something. How did you do?
