World War III was due this morning. I made an extra coffee thinking they were late, after all this is Florida. But it is already past prime freeway-blocking hour, what gives? Some smart aleck posted that the war is on hold because it was leaked the IRS is tracking down their sponsors. No wonder the left is afraid of Planatir. Thanks to all who sent me cheer-up notes the past day, I see I was a bit in the dumps over my situation. A particular shout to Trent, who, having played a gig or two as a duo, knows the position music holds around here.
(I should state I am not depressed, but more like disappointed, and would also point out my back treatment is only 25% done.) There is every hope my situation will change for the better and we can carry on with what is, by many standards, a pretty darn good retirement over here.
You know what ‘picka-panny’ is? The slang for “speak Spanish”, which I sort of do, so this morning the manageress over here is checking on those $135 Alcatels from Winter Haven. She may be able to get me a couple with only a $10 activation fee, which she can cancel the next month. The units are fantastically untraceable and that’s a real feature these days. Maybe she will carry them over in her beautiful new Z-box that she loved the moment she saw it. Here’s a view of six Z-boxes set out in the elements (except water) to see how they weather.
Most of my days now center on how my ancient back is behaving, and today is off to a good start. These injections do nothing for pain when present, but kind of slowly restore flexibility, which helps but not directly. We have plenty of coffee and Tampa radio says a high of 90°F. I read an article on Von Borbeck’s 1918 raid into Rhodesia, making him the only German commander who invaded British territory in that war. He lost around 2,000 men compared to the Allies 300,000 mainly to disease. Somebody will eventually make a movie and call it “The Lion of Africa”.
Another chapter of “Justice Denied” has our audiobook detective chasing down a cold case, which is a popular theme these days. Forensic investigation. The location is north of Seattle, so I recognize a lot of the placenames. It also reminds me there is not one person left that I know in that part of the world. It really has been 45 years. But over here it has been 45 minutes and we have a feisty varmint. The trap is left active in the kitchen corner for such opportunities What can I say, that’s the excitement for this morning. Life has slowed down.
Which brings up another topic. The episode with my back is fair warning of another pending situation. Much of my goings-on depend on having great mobility. Would I not be wise to prepare for the day, or should I sit around like the rest and let it take me by surprise? I mean more like getting around than going out for supplies. I’ve never been as home-bound as the last 90 days. And I’ve not taken a travel day since early December, by my definition. Turns out I don’t know anyone who has had a back injury that I could ask about consequences. Then again, I have not met anyone who builds any boxes or plays any bass around here either.

Music. I wonder it I can sing some of this new material. There are already tunes I find easy and difficult. Not that many years ago, they were all difficult. Roberto (have I not found a better nickname for him yet) has texted that he played that gig and wants more time. He wants to use his fancy Bose PA but we don’t need that to rehearse. I asked about an afternoon session at his club. He’s mentioned they have Saturday music, but not until way later in the evening. I have not forgotten around half the gigs I’ve played in Florida started as freebies.
Tell you what, let me bring up that Bose on the net and see how it operates. What a boon that would be if we can use the other guy’s PA. He mentioned the bass reflex speaker, so I wonder if he has one of those $2,100 L1 towers. That would be all we’d ever need. Moments later, no luck. It is a two channel mixer, taken up by one guitar and one microphone. There may be an aux jack not mentioned in the specs. Knowing Bose, they will count a 1/8” stereo plug as “two input channels”. Way to go, Bose, try to sell each musician a unit.
No nuclear war this morning, not a peep out of the far left. No explosions or fires or riots, but the Democrats did just shoot one of their own who voted against party lines. There was a gathering in Minnesota billed as “thousands”, but the wide-angle video shows maybe 400, and those needed police to keep them from counter protestors. I got a reply from Caltier by faking my email address. They have never responded to e-mails from the listed address, but now I know they are getting them. My account is still suspended for no reason. There is certainly nothing legal wrong with it, but I’ve suspected for some time now they have mistakenly presumed our investor status. The only other reasonable option is that we’ve exceeded some investment limit, but somehow I cannot see that.
Is it my shots or the inactivity of the last day? I felt fine after I got moving this morning. Instead of doing things I should, I worked on another batch of boxes. My task is to find the correct cut to make the bottom plates symmetrical and it turns out to be the most difficult part of the assembly. The bottom were always a challenge and I did not meet it today. I know the measurement, I need three pieces that are 23/8ths wide, for a total of 69/8ths. That’s a total of 8-5/8ths but expressed to show how exact I’ve tried to make the cuts.
Do you need any mangos? I helped the neighbor throw out 150 that were lying all over the ground. I chose another eight and put them out to ripen. Just picking them up gets your hands all sticky and it will not rinse off with water. Uncooperative mangos, ripen when they hit the ground and get covered with ants. I’ve misplace an important tool, the router that slices the panel grooves. There is another project I want to try that I think I could sell for $60. I’m nearing planned inventory for both Z-boxes and E-boxes. While these make great tool trays, they don’t make good tool boxes, as they have no closing lids or carry handles.
YouTube has really ramped up the anti-ad blocker, but it is still easy to defeat. But they are getting better so come on, AdBlocker people, get those updates happening. Coupled with that new Florida “proof of age” law, it amounts to an annoyance. The movies seem linked together with no pause button on the command bar. Hmmm. What are we dealing with? It is typical GenX mentality to think somebody who uses an ad blocker is going to buy something if you force him to watch the ad. I don’t get bothered by the “unstoppable” ads because I don’t allow Chrome on my computers.
ADDENDUM
Here’s something new I accomplished today. This is my “navigation box”, fitted to hold basic plotting gear and standard nautical almanac. I found the boxes made from planed lumber are excellent instrument cases, but they would require some sort of lining, if only for looks. Snag, I have no experience at this and the how-to videos are way too smooth for me. The closest thing I could relate to was LizJohn’s hobby of making those Tiffany lamps. When I tried using fabric glue, I got myself a mess, so I reverted to good old ModgePodge, shown here.
Shall we say I learned a lot about what not to do. Normally, the fabric is glued onto cardboard, just not this time. I’m more likely to work with poster board. Where on Earth is my paper slicer? Later, by day’s end I would rate today as pain-free, first time in a year. Two side-effects, my shoulder blades still feel out of exact, I can make them click. There is some discomfort. walking more than a few minutes at a time. But discomfort is not pain and I’ll settle for that.
