One year ago today: August 3, 2024, under the seat.
Five years ago today: August 3, 2020, no COVID talk allowed.
Nine years ago today: August 3, 2016, I like pancakes.
Random years ago today: August 3, 2006, last babe in Florida.
Yep, we get a day off. You know, the travel budget has not been used for two months, that is, I travel, but it does not count unless it is overnight or to a new or infrequent destination. You know I’ll find something, being that Florida is a top vacation destination. Hark back, however, to the number of times we’ve been millennialized. For example, one contender is in Jacksonville, but it is impossible to tell from the advertising if the Jacksonville History Center, Jacksonville Historical Center, and Jacksonville Historical Society are the same or different entities. TripAdvisor, in their wisdom, does not give the addresses. Pictures today may be random, but they are today.
That’s why top story is my stain and paint sample shelf out in the big shed lean-to. It’s a good thing I put in all the windows as that is primarily how the neighbor keeps in touch. Something in the back of my mind said this morning I should look at a project I heard of back in my 30s. An alternative to the Suez Canal, called the Ben Gurion, an early terrorist leader. Sure enough, there is some sort of connection. The northern terminus would be in Ashkelon, which is within rocket range of Gaza. Every. Single. Time. It seems the Israeli canal could be a billion dollars cheaper if it could cut right through the strip. (The Suez is bringing in $10 billion a year in shipping fees.) It is now known the Israelis knew about the October HAMAS attack weeks in advance, meaning they let it happen.
The tube is ready to mail. I must have logged that one in my early days, not recognizing I could have got double the price. Oh well, we have an extra tank of gas and anything we want to do today. You know, it I decide to tackle the rest of those tubes, there’s probably some good money in there yet. How about I put in some rafter hangers and think about it? Or coffee first, then the hangers? I’m more in the mood for building a couple small boxes. Or I have around six odd boxes that just need minor repairs or finishing. Stick around, this day could go anywhere by the sounds of it. There is a mystery critter that leaves no prints randomly knocking things over in the yard. Not a raccoon, but probably around that size.
Enjoying the coffee, I slapped a couple tools under the laser for permanent markings. One was yellow plastic and it exhibited a neat property. The material won’t etch, but it melts momentarily, leaving a glowing trail that solidifies into the lettering and leaving a slightly raised feel to each outline. I ran a heavy duty black marker over the pattern to see if it looks nice. Not really, but it makes it more readable. We also note that for its primary purpose of printing labels on wood, the focus of the laser beam is not at all that critical. It is probably 30x sharper than it needs to be.
The morning gone. What did I do? I rewired the lean-to switches and hauled out some old carpet I won’t use. I measured the lean to work bench and it is not long enough to cut what I’ll need. So the saws go inside the big shed. I got a screen over the other lean-to window and found the electric mower has enough to cut just one path to the back yard. I’m down to one working air conditioner. I cleared a space for the rafters, if I get the hangers up, I may call it quits for the day. I still get reminders that my back is half-again as old as the rest of me.
Best French beer, 2024.

Looks like an upswing in finances. I was just on the horn to the left coast and things are back to normal—but with major changes pending. Having nothing to do with my relatives, I tend to forget others have the identical run-ins, but prefer to let them go on for years. My estate manager has a big house that she bought so people could visit. Just like I bought a small house so I could visit others. Well, seems we’ve reached a similar destination. Just like I cannot find anyone to chum with locally, her company that used to visit has dwindled away. She is now making the decision to sell and that was the source of many upsets.
Just as I found even this small place too much, she has a three bedroom acreage on the lake. And Seven, the German shepherd, is now 90 lbs. If you recall, she had spine issues and same as me found walking the dogs a real task. She reports dog walkers now want $100 per week. And she reports the identical challenge finding help as I detailed a few years ago. Everybody wants $50 an hour. I predict she will sell soon and find something more right-sized. She has many relatives (and attendant scenarios) who no longer visit now that they have become older themselves. My advice is sell now, and if they visit, put them in a motel. It’s cheaper.
This is an excellent view of the dense leaf cover provided by the linden trees, this photo was from this morning. The leaves are large, often a foot long, and clog your rake. But they have lowered my cooling bills and significantly extend the possible work hours in the yard. It is not ideal as the shedded leaves are a mess, but it has the important attribute that it will grow around here. By the way, I’m again looking at possibly growing some radishes again. They thrive, but each batch so far matured while I was out of town.
Back to finances, the other issue is that I have always (until now) traveled light. LizJohn has always had a place full of things. I know that I spent months on a database to sell the tubes in a wink, but others don’t have that situation. Selling off what she no longer needs or uses has become a real burden and no wonder she doesn’t like it. Have you ever dealt with people on-line? Can I come get it next Tuesday? And never show while you turn down other buyers. I have scared off a dozen lookie-lous who want to know if the tube is tested.
Yes, at the factory, numbskull, the things are brand new. How I get rid of these jerks is tell them I will test it for them, on the condition if it passes, they agree to purchase it at full price. I have yet to hear back from one. After this morale boost, I was out in the yard a few hours. I got the rafters cut and up on the roof but not installed. Years ago I left one plank in place because it was too rickety to hold in place while I cut it. Guess what is now in the way and I can’t lift it.
The shingled siding is put in place but the sky started to cloud over. I quickly put the tools away and faked me out. It cleared on me, be we are ready to go. I dismantled the temp shelving to make way for better spaces that fit my now plentiful boxes. The area is already partially wired but the floor is a mess. That is the black soil underneath and it rotted way even treated lumber. I read more of “1421” paying more attention to tech parts, like how they held the ships together with brass bolts and iron hoops. The survival rate was one in ten.
Recall my visit to the phosphate mine in Mulberry? The Mosiac mining group is not listed as a major supplier, but now there is news of a massive discovery in southwest Norway. Already one of the wealthiest per capita countries, this supply right next to the European demand could make Norway the richest country in history. All oil and mineral profits by law go into a government social security fund. Last I heard the fund was approaching two trillion dollars.
What I was looking for was the outcome of a sinkhole that opened under one of the mine tailing “mountains” just five miles from here. They care called gypstacks and they are too toxic to bury. It contaminated the aquifer, and hence very likely the water I make my coffee from. Again, no word, the story, unlike the mining byproduct, has been buried.
Speaking of toxic, a 20 y.o. woman smuggling 26 phones glued to her body has died in Brazil. She would have wanted to go that way. The Democrats in Texas are fleeing the State so the legislature can’t meet the quorum requirements to pass the redistricting bill. This is an example of how the left slowly infects the system over years until they pull this kind of stunt. Problem, Texas can arrest politicians who do this. All 51 of them.
ADDENDUM
This long session today brought other issues to the surface. I’m getting many of the same side-effects from steroids. But in varying degrees. One is disruption of sleep, I can’t really drop off more than four hours at a time any more. However, being a long-term mild insomniac, I was equipped to deal with it. She was not, and I can’t help. My solutions took half a lifetime to develop. Not that many people will resort to reading a nautical almanac for fun. Having nobody to hang with is a common theme in older people. I think because you lack the patience to nurture new people along after both parties are set in their ways.
I recognize my situation as a miscalculation. I figured everywhere I’d ever live, there would be at least a few people with interests in common. Until I arrived, I had little idea how rare interesting people are but it did not take me by surprise. I have the option to join a line dance club or get my sidecar back on the road, to name a couple of things. What surprises me is now little others have done to cover themselves in this department. It’s a predictable outcome that I see has hit others a lot harder than me. I think I’ll grab my bass and play.
